The mechanics

How Stripe
fees work.

Five stacking layers determine what you actually pay. Most calculators only show the first two.

  1. 01

Apply the base percentage to the transaction amount

Stripe takes a percentage of every successful card charge. The percentage depends on the country of your Stripe account and the card brand.

  2. 02

    Add the fixed per-transaction fee

Most countries also have a small fixed fee ($0.30 US, £0.20 UK, €0.25 EEA) added to every transaction. The fixed fee is what makes small charges expensive in percentage terms. Japan is an exception - no fixed yen fee, but a ¥120 minimum applies if 3.6% of the amount produces less.

  3. 03

Add international card surcharge if applicable

When the card is issued outside your account country, Stripe adds an extra surcharge - 1.5% in the US, 1.0% for EEA cards in the UK and EEA, 0.8% in Canada, 1.8% in Australia, 0.5% in Singapore.

  4. 04

    Add currency conversion if applicable

When the customer pays in a currency different from your account currency, Stripe converts at a rate that includes a 1-2% spread (1% US, 2% almost everywhere else).

  5. 05

Subtract the total fee from the customer charge

The remainder lands in your Stripe balance. Subscription billing (+0.7%), Stripe Tax (flat or 0.5%), and instant payouts (+1-1.5%) each add small amounts on top if used.

// pro tip

Bank-debit methods - ACH (US, capped $5), SEPA (EEA, flat €0.35), BACS (UK, capped £4), BECS (Australia, capped A$3.50), PAD (Canada, capped CA$5) - cost a fraction of card processing. Slower (2-3 business days) but for recurring or high-value B2B charges, switching can cut your Stripe bill by 70-90%.

Worked examples.

Three scenarios calculated end-to-end so you can sanity-check the calculator.

Small charge

$5 product, US

US Stripe account, US customer.

$5 × 2.9% + $0.30
$0.45~9% effective

Fixed fee dominates on small charges. Sub-$10 transactions get hammered.

Large charge

$500 invoice, US

US Stripe account, US customer.

$500 × 2.9% + $0.30
$14.80~2.96% effective

Fixed fee shrinks proportionally as amount grows.

Cross-border

$100, EU card → US

US Stripe account, EU customer paying with EU card in EUR.

$100 × (2.9% + 1.5% intl + 1% FX) + $0.30
$5.70~5.7% effective

Cross-border stacks 3 surcharges. Local payment methods cut this in half.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Everything else worth knowing about Stripe's fee structure.

PAD is the Canadian equivalent of US ACH or UK BACS - bank-to-bank pulls authorised by your customer. Stripe charges 1% + CA$0.40 capped at CA$5 per transaction. For any charge above ~CA$460, PAD is cheaper than card. Best for recurring B2B invoicing and subscriptions; settles in a few business days.

Stripe charges a percentage of each successful card transaction plus a small fixed fee. Rates vary by country: typically around 2.9% + $0.30 in the US, 1.5% + £0.20 in the UK, 1.5% + €0.25 in the EEA, 1.7% + A$0.30 in Australia, and 3.6% with a ¥120 floor in Japan. The exact figures shown in this calculator are pulled directly from Stripe's public pricing pages.

Yes. When a customer pays with a card issued outside your Stripe account country, Stripe adds an international card surcharge - typically +1.5% in the US, +1.0% in the UK and EEA (for cards from within the EEA, higher for non-EEA), +0.8% in Canada, +1.8% in Australia, and +0.5% in Singapore. If the transaction also requires currency conversion, expect another 1–2% on top.

If you use Stripe Billing for recurring payments, Stripe charges an additional 0.7% on top of standard processing - confirmed across all 7 markets in this calculator. Toggle "Subscription billing" to include it.

The dispute fee is non-refundable on a loss and refunded on a win. Amounts vary by market: $15 USD, £20 GBP, €20 EUR, CA$15, A$25, ¥1,500, or S$15. Disputes are not added to per-transaction estimates above; they are per-incident, not per-transaction.

No. On the standard plan there are no setup fees, no monthly fees, and no minimum transaction volumes. You only pay when a transaction succeeds.

Use bank-debit payment methods where possible: ACH (US, capped at $5), SEPA (EEA, flat €0.35), BACS (UK, capped at £4), BECS (AU, capped at A$3.50), and PAD (Canada, capped at CA$5) cost a fraction of card processing for any large or recurring charge. For high-volume businesses (typically >$100k/month) Stripe negotiates custom card rates. For international sales, accepting local payment methods (SEPA, BACS, iDEAL, PayNow) usually costs less than international card transactions.

Stripe Tax automatically calculates and collects sales tax / VAT / GST on transactions. Pricing varies: $0.50 flat per transaction in the US, 0.5% per transaction in most other markets (with API-tier flat-fee variants in the UK, EU, and Singapore). Toggle "Stripe Tax" under Advanced options to include it in your estimate.

Instant payouts move funds from your Stripe balance to your bank in minutes instead of the standard 2-business-day rolling schedule. Stripe charges +1.5% in the US and Australia, +1.0% in the UK, EEA, Canada, and Singapore (each with a small minimum fee). Instant payout is not currently published for Japan. Useful for cash-flow-sensitive businesses; expensive if used habitually.
